Not Just Economic Growth, Quality of Life
When we talk of a smart city, we understand that the final goal is not just economic growth but an enhancement of the quality of life for all people. This is why Singapore is often held up as an example – Singapore is no not just a smart city but a quality city-state.
The idea is catching on that there are more effective and efficient ways to live where we can do less harm to the planet and enjoy a better quality of life. Durban is planning to be the smartest city in Africa.
New Smart Cities have been created like the Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Knowledge Village, which provide state-of-the-art infrastructure, environment and support systems that also promote the growth of knowledge-based companies.
Smart City Malta and Smart City Kochi in India are in the pipeline. Plans are that Smart City Kochi will offer a host of business support services as well as residential, hospitality, retail and recreational facilities. The project has an employment generation potential of over 90,000 jobs.
